FAQs
Q.
Sigmund Freud
I am looking into becoming a psychologist and I am hoping to make a difference in the world. I was talking to a teacher of mine and he suggested that in order to find inspiration I should look up Sigmund Freud and see how he changed the world. So that is my question - how has he affected the world of today?
Q.
"As-If" Personality
Can you tell me what Helene Deutsch meant by as-if personality and where I can read about it?
Q.
Carl Jung
I heard a mention of a psychoanalyst by the name of "Young" (spelling?). What has he published? Is it Karl Young?
Q.
A Cigar is Just a Cigar
Do you know the origin of the famous quote attributed to Freud "Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar"? Years ago, I read that the true quote was actually "Gentlemen, this cigar may be a phallus, but let us remember it is also a cigar" (which is a much more reasonable and interesting version, if true). Unfortunately, I cannot remember where I read this. I suspect that the original quote was not in anything Freud wrote but rather in a letter or paper by one of his colleagues. Can you help me find this? Thanks.
Q.
Edith Jacobson
I am a doctoral student studying the history of psychoanalysis. Currently, I am searching for information about the life of Edith Jacobson. So far, I have not found any articles, books, or interviews that deal with Dr. Jacobson's imprisonment in Nazi Germany, emigration to the U.S., or life in New York. Could you possibly direct me toward any sources that examine Dr. Jacobson's life?
Q.
Eissler and Loewenstein
Could you possibly give a brief explanation on Eissler and Loewenstein and their analytic backgrounds?
Q.
The "Father" of Psychoanalysis
I'm trying to find the father of or the first person that started the study of psychoanalysis. Possibly a biography on this individual, if possible.
Q.
Freud-Jung Ritual
I enjoy reading "Ask a Psychoanalyst" on the 'APsaA' home page and I thought perhaps you could help me with something that's been puzzling me for some time. (I've dredged the library and Web for an answer, but all to no avail). When Freud initially accepted Jung as his 'annointed' successor, it would appear they carried out some small ritual to mark the event. Do you know the precise nature of the ritual that they carried out? I realize that this is very left-field (and not the type of question you normally deal with!), but I'd be grateful if you could shed some light on this... P.S. I hope there was such an event because otherwise I've constructed a rather bizarre memory!
Q.
Freud the Behaviorist?
Do you think Freud was a behaviorist ahead of his time?
Q.
Historical Research
Is there any literature about psychoanalysis and historical research, about "narrative (oral?) history" research?
Q.
Hysterical Misery vs. Common Unhappiness
I would appreciate your help in uncovering the source of a quote from Freud: "The goal of psychoanalysis is to convert neurotic misery into ordinary unhappiness." I am a psychologist in Los Angeles, completing a book on parenting for Scribner, and would like to make the proper attribution in my "Notes." Unfortunately, I've known this quotation for so long I can't recall where I originally read it.
Q.
Neuroscience and Psychoanalysis
I am a student in Australia with a hypothetical question regarding Freud's theories of personality. Suppose a man is involved in an accident that results in damage to the frontal lobe of his brain, and now demonstrates different traits such as diminished patience. How would Freud go about explaining such a change in behavior considering he believed personality to be set by childhood- has the man's personality changed or does is have more to do with the brain damage causing certain behaviors to manifest differently?
Q.
Psychoanalysis in America
I am currently working on a paper regarding psychoanalysis and one of the things that I am interested in is why did most of the Americans reject psychoanalysis?
Q.
Psychoanalysis in the 21st Century
I am a senior psychology student and I was wondering if you could give me some information on how Freud is applied today in clinical settings? And how do see psychoanalysis being used in the 21st Century?
Q.
References for Freud Essay
I'm writing an essay on Freud, and am going to use some of your information on psychoanalysis. The problem is that it doesn't say who has written it. I need a name for my references. I would be very happy if you could help me with that!
Q.
Relevance of Freud today
I am a junior high school student in Connecticut. I am doing my junior research paper on whether or not Freud is still right in today's society. How much of his work is still applicable?
Q.
The International Psychoanalytical Association
I'm from Spain. I'm working in a History university on the different streams of thought in the International Psychoanalytic Association between 1900-1940.
Q.
Trends in Psychoanalysis
I am a high school student doing a research project on psychoanalysis. I was wondering if you could highlight any general trends as far as the numbers and popularity of psychoanalysis as a treatment goes since its inception. I was also wondering if there were any trends in different modes of thought regarding the application of psychoanalysis?
Q.
Wilhelm Reich and Fritz Perls
What were the personality theories of Wilhelm Reich and Fritz Perls?
