Jake Lynn Takes on Public Affairs Duties for American Psychoanalytic Association

New York, NY- Veteran communications officer Jake Lynn has assumed the role of Director of Public Affairs for the American Psychoanalytic Association (APsaA). Lynn, who began on September 1st is a former Press Secretary to several elected officials in the New York City area and worked in the Bloomberg Administration’s Small Business Services Department in the same capacity. He also directed public affairs efforts for the New York Historical Society, the oldest museum in New York City.

Most recently, Lynn worked for boutique public relations agencies in New York and New Jersey, where he advised clients in the management consulting, labor and non-profit sector on their communication and marketing tactics and drove better name recognition through a combination of national media placements and top-tier speaking engagements. Lynn, a graduate of Syracuse University, began his career as a TV producer and reporter for media outlets such as Dow Jones, CNN, and the regional News 12 Networks.

"I am delighted to have someone with Jake’s comprehensive background in advocacy communications join our association," said APsaA President Prudy Gourguechon, M.D. “His equal understanding of new and traditional media, coupled with a strong grasp of federal legislative policy is the ideal person we need as the Association approaches its second century of existence.”

Psychoanalysis was first introduced to the world by Dr. Sigmund Freud, now credited as the father of modern psychiatry and psychology. Freud founded the International Psychoanalytical Association in 1910 and the American Psychoanalytic Association was formed a year later, setting off a century of study of the unconscious motivations that lurk within the human mind. Today, APsaA continues to focus on member education, research and development for psychoanalysts and other mental health professionals.

In addition to the national organization, APsaA’s membership includes 29 accredited training institutes and 42 affiliate psychoanalytic societies throughout the United States. APsaA has developed vibrant and innovative programming for the mental health profession and the general public. The Association and its more than 3,400 highly trained members gather at biannual meetings in January and June to exchange ideas about psychoanalytic practice and theory and current affairs such as national health care reform, veterans care, and medical privacy issues. Many public activities relating to psychoanalysis are also presented by the APsaA’s affiliated societies-- and by institutes which have the highest level of training for psychoanalysts.

These programs provide forums for the exchange of new ideas and highlight the contribution of psychoanalytic principles in helping to understand important social problems. To further the spread of ideas, APsaA publishes the highly respected Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association (JAPA).
