Psychoanalysts Kick-Off 100th Anniversary at 2011 National Meeting
Sigmund Freud’s great granddaughter & several historical panels highlight the centennial celebration
New York, NY- The 2011 National Meeting of the American Psychoanalytic Association (APsaA) marks the beginning of 100 years of psychoanalysis in America. APsaA’s largest gathering of the year will once again be held at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel from January 12th–16th; the same location where APsaA has held an annual meeting since 1947. Nearly 200 stimulating discussion groups, clinical panels and workshops will address current events from a psychoanalytic perspective, such as teen bullying, treating war veterans who suffer from PTSD, and the five year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. The Meeting is open to the public and will be of most interest to mental health professionals, educators, researchers and students. Click here for a complete list of sessions that are open to the media.
In addition, the program includes several sessions and events designed specifically with the Association’s centennial in mind. For example, a conversation between APsaA President Warren R. Procci and Jane McAdam Freud, great granddaughter of Sigmund Freud and daughter of Lucian Freud, who will mount her first solo sculpture exhibition in January at the Sundaram Tagore Gallery in New York. Several notable international psychoanalysts including Peter Fonagy, Ph.D and Glen Gabbard, M.D. will take part in panel discussions on the influence of Freud and psychoanalysis on American culture and mental health therapy. Meanwhile, Dr. George Makari, Director of The Institute for the History of Psychiatry at Weill Cornell Medical College will lead a Plenary Address on the Past and Future of Psychoanalysis.
“The American Psychoanalytic Association’s National Meeting is the largest gathering of psychoanalytic topics and professionals in the United States under one roof. It is only fitting as we celebrate 100 years of organized psychoanalytic treatment in America that we present our largest and most robust Meeting to date,” said APsaA President Warren R. Procci.
As in the past, the National Meeting will have a unique guest for the Special Symposium on Saturday, January 15th. Melissa Febos, author of “Whip Smart: A Memoir” will regale the audience with her four year experience working as a dominatrix in New York. The Symposium will suggest new ways of conceptualizing pleasure and trauma, while taking up questions of the erotics of power and its abuses in and outside the consulting room.
Two multimedia companion pieces were developed for the 100th anniversary. A short video, which premieres at the official centennial party on Wednesday, January 12th, and a centennial micro-website, which contains an interactive timeline of psychoanalytic events, historical photos and a reading room, were both created to educate the public and increase awareness of the importance of psychoanalysis as a mental health treatment. Both items can be found at the Association’s website: www.apsa.org.
The American Psychoanalytic Association is a professional organization of mental health professionals who adhere to psychoanalytic therapy and is comprised of approximately 3,300 members. The oldest psychoanalytic organization in the nation, APsaA will celebrate its 100th Annual Meeting June 8-12, 2011 in San Francisco, CA. Visit www.apsa.org for more information.
