JAPA PSA-NETCAST
DISCUSSION OF RESEARCH WITH SIDNEY BLATT, JOZEF CORVELEYN, and PATRICK LUYTEN

The next JAPA Netcast will be “Minding the Gap Between Positivism and Hermeneutics in Psychoanalytic Research” (JAPA, 54/2, pp. 571-610, 2006) by Patrick Luyten, Sidney J. Blatt and Jozef Corveleyn. We are especially pleased that Drs. Luyten, Blatt and Corveleyn will be joining us online for this discussion.

The paper is available on the JAPA website at www.apsa/org/Portals/1/docs/JAPA/Luyten-571-610C.pdf

The authors state: Two quite different cultures are to be found within psychoanalysis, one more clinical in orientation, more focused on meaning and interpretation, and relying primarily on the traditional case study method, the other more research-orientated, focused on cause-and-effect relationships, and relying primarily on methods borrowed from the natural and social sciences. The history of this divide is reviewed and arguments, pro and con, about the potential contributions of specific types of empirical investigations are discussed. This discussion will start on September 15, 2007 and last for 30 days.

Authors

Patrick Luyten, Ph.D.Patrick Luyten, Ph.D. is Assistant Professor and Co-Director of the Psychoanalysis Unit at the Department of Psychology, University of Leuven (Belgium). His main research interest concerns the role of personality and interpersonal processes in depression and other disorders of the affective spectrum, including chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, and other chronic pain conditions. In this context, he is particularly interested in the interface between psychoanalysis, cognitive behavioral approaches, and the neurosciences. Other research interests include process-outcome research of psychoanalytic treatments. He is currently involved in a study on mentalization based treatment of borderline personality disorder, and is developing a mentalization based treatment for functional somatic disorders. In addition, he is interested in the place of psychoanalytic approaches towards the classification of psychopathology, and the empirical status of psychoanalysis in general.

Sidney J. Blatt, Ph.D.Sidney J. Blatt, professor of psychiatry and psychology at Yale University, received his Ph.D. in 1957 from the University of Chicago in Personality Development and Psychopathology, where he interned with Dr. Carl Rogers at the Counseling Center. After an NIMH postdoctoral fellowship at the Psychosomatic and Psychiatric Institute at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago, he joined the faculty at Yale University in the Department of Psychology in 1960, where three years later he also assumed responsibility as Chief of the Psychology Section in the Department of Psychiatry. He received a fellowship from the Foundations Fund for Research in Psychiatry for psychoanalytic training, graduating the Western New England Psychoanalytic Institute in 1972. (2004) Experiences of depression: Theoretical, clinical, and research perspectives integrates nearly three decades of clinical and empirical research demonstrating the value of considering the psychological dimensions of depression in understanding the etiology, clinical expressions, and treatment of depression and 2) Corveleyn, J., Luyten, P & Blatt, S. J. (Eds., 2005), The theory and treatment of depression: Towards a dynamic interactionism model. His most recent book, Polarities of experience: Relatedness and self-definition in personality development, psychopathology and the therapeutic process, is due to be released in February 2008.

Stuart T. Hauser, M.D., Ph.D.Stuart T. Hauser has an M.D. from Yale University and a Ph.D. in psychology from Harvard University. He graduated from the Boston Psychoanalytic Institute and is on the faculty there. He is currently a senior scientist at the Judge Baker Children's Center at Harvard and a Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard. He is also a Visiting Professor in the Department of Psychology, University College, London and Professor II at the Norwegian Institute of Public Health in Oslo, Norway. His long-term research interests include adolescent ego development and the adolescent adaptation to onset of diabetes. He has spearheaded a new consistent emphasis on psychoanalytic research in JAPA, using empirical studies to bridge the gap between the world of psychological research and clinical practice. The paper we are discussing is a tribute to the work of Dr. Hauser at JAPA.

Leon HoffmanLeon Hoffman is Training and Supervising Analyst, New York Psychoanalytic Institute and Supervisor in Child/Adolescent Psychoanalysis and Director of the Pacella Parent Child Center, New York Psychoanalytic Society and Institute. He has served in many capacities both at the New York Psychoanalytic Institute and at the American Psychoanalytic Association, including as Associate Editor of JAPA. He has published extensively for both the psychoanalytic literature and for the general public (for both parents and others). He has published on feminine psychology and in the area of child development and child analysis. In 2006 he appeared on Newsweek on Air along with Eric Kandel (and which remains on the web) on the occasion of the 150th Anniversary of Freud's birth. In October 2006, he was PANY's Sperling Lecturer. In recent years he has become more and more involved in a variety of empirical studies as a result of learning from and collaborating with Wilma Bucci, an Honorary Member of NYPI and Professor at Derner Institute of Adelphi University. In addition to a variety of research activities at Pacella resulting in several posters and papers, they have developed a project jointly with Bernard Maskit on the "Evaluation of treatment process using computerized measures applied to process notes." He and Dr. Bucci have been awarded a 2 year research grant from the Fund for Psychoanalytic Research of the American Psychoanalytic Association. He has also developed a new course for candidates on Empirical Approaches to Psychoanalytic Thinking at NYPI which has received favorable reviews.
