SOFAR co-founders win Encore Award

By Prudence L. Gourguechon on 10/28/2009 9:44 PM

Our colleagues Ken Reich and Jaine Darwin, cofounders of SOFAR (Strategic Outreach to Families of All Reservists) have been honored with the 2009 Purpose Prize, awarded to social entrepreneurs who address social issues in the second half of their professional lives.

The American Psychoanalytic Association is proud to serve as a sponsor or SOFAR (www.sofarusa.org) which provides pro bono mental health services to extended family members of military reservists. Please visit the webpages for APsaA's Soldiers and Veterans Initiative for more information about what psychoanalysts are doing to help returning soldiers and their families.

This is the mission of the Purpose Prize:

The Purpose Prize is a program of the Encore Careers campaign, which aims to engage millions of boomers in encore careers combining social impact, personal meaning and continued income in the second half of life. The goal: produce a windfall of human talent to solve society's greatest problems, from education to the environment, health care to homelessness.

It's an interesting concept. Check out the encore website.

Jaine and Ken, as part of their prize, will attend a "summit on innovation" at Stanford's Graduate School of Business Center on Social Innovation at the end of this month. Which brings me to recommend another of my favorite resources, the Stanford Social Innovation Review. An often riveting magazine covering best strategies for nonprofits, foundations, and socially responsible businesses (www.ssireview.org). The magazine has interesting articles on nonprofit leadership, ethics, mission and more. Sometimes we psychoanalysts forget that there is a whole world of expertise outside our walls on managing nonprofits and educational institutions, which we do in our "spare time".
