Take Action on Gun Violence

APsaA is working with Congressman Brian Babin (R-TX) and others to pass The Threat Assessment, Prevention, and Safety (TAPS) Act of 2019 (H.R.838 / S.265) which will create a multidisciplinary national task force of experts to develop guidelines for behavior-based threat assessment and management. By evaluating potential risk and intervening early, this bill will help reduce acts of community violence. The law will also support communities impacted by recent violence.

Currently 112 members of the House of Representatives, both republican and democrat, have cosponsored the bill and it is endorsed by 25 leading national mental health organizations. Please read this letter of support.

We are encouraging our members and the general public to contact their representatives and senators to garner their support for this important legislation. Dear Senator / Representative:

As your constituent, I am contacting you to express my concerns about community violence and to urge your support for The Threat Assessment, Prevention, and Safety (TAPS) Act of 2019 (H.R.838 / S.265)

((Use H.R. 838 for representatives and S.265 for senators)).

This bipartisan legislation is an important step towards reducing community violence as the bill creates a multidisciplinary taskforce, including mental health professionals, to develop national guidelines for behavior-based threat assessment and management. The goal would be to carefully evaluate potential risk and to intervene before tragedy occurs.

I have been frustrated by the lack of a coordinated response to recent acts of violence and see this legislation as a means to protect individual rights while also protecting our communities.

U.S. Representatives Brian Babin and Val Demings and Senators Kyrsten Sinema, Marco Rubio, and Thom Tillis are among the 100+ co-sponsors. I urge you to review this important legislation and join your colleagues in co-sponsoring this bill.

Together we can help stem the violence plaguing our communities.

Sincerely,
